Does Business Link?
Last Monday I attended a Business Link (and partners) event at Fazeley Studios in Birmingham aimed at helping local creative companies get through the economic downturn. The thing was, only about 3 companies actually turned up! Why was this? The weather? It had been a bit frosty that morning but most of the roads were clear and the event was conveniently scheduled at lunch time. Content? I admit some of the presentations were a bit irrelevant – for example, discussing selling your company on when most people are struggling to keep their’s viable. However, there were some real gems, such as Alec McPhedran’s (from Skills TV) 6 key tips for keeping your business afloat, and Andy Tait’s investment mantras. Maybe everyone was busy getting some work done? Whatever the reason, at a time when the regions 20,000+ creative businesses are more in need of support, guidance and direction than ever before, it just wasn’t happening.

Thanks that’s very interesting insight and it sounds like there was some excellent stuff on the day.
Of course first impressions count and I’m thinking it could be because of past expereinces with business link work. We have often been called in by clients who had a bad first experience with business link, although clearly some do have excellent help from them. I’d say it comes down to the quality of the advisor. Has the advisor long experience of running their own company and knowing what the difficulties and opportunities are, or have they just read about business in theory?
